About

Wandong and Heathcote Junction are joined as a township on the Hume Freeway, 54 km north of Melbourne. ‘Wandong’ is thought to be derived from an Aboriginal word meaning spirit or ghost.

Wandong grew mainly around a railway siding and sawmills during the early 1870s. The siding, first called Morphett’s Siding after a selector, Patrick Morphett, gave way to a small township by the mid-1870s. The nearest school was Lightwood Flat (1871), which was moved to Wandong in 1882.

The Wandong Hotel (now the Magpie & Stump Hotel) was built to accommodate the needs of railway and sawmill workers in the late 1800's.

Today, the Magpie & Stump brings guests all the features of a modern and dynamic hotel, but with a relaxed and friendly "old style" feel.

Whether you are looking for a social get together with a few close friends and family, hosting a major function or conference or enjoying the relaxed bars, lounges and social facilities on offer, the Magpie & Stump in Wandong welcomes you.
